our story

For years, something was silently harming our family- and we had no idea. Ashley, my wife, was experiencing chronic health issues that seemed to worsen by the day. Fatigue, joint pain, headaches, brain fog, and sleepless nights became our norm. We spent thousands of dollars on doctors, specialists, and tests, desperate to find answers. But nothing explained her suffering. Until one day, a naturopath ordered a toxin test- and what it revealed changed everything. The results showed extremely high levels of mold in Ashley’s bloodstream. We were shocked. Mold? In our home? We didn’t see it. We didn’t smell it.
But we were told to investigate our environment. So I did what I knew how to do- as a home builder, I started digging into my home. And what I found horrified us. Mold was everywhere. Behind the shower tile. Beneath the flooring. In the HVAC system. In the air ducts running through our children’s bedrooms. We realized our home—the one we bought after getting married, the one we brought our babies home to—was slowly poisoning us. And we didn’t even know it.
Our daughter, who had been struggling to learn to read, began progressing rapidly once we moved out. Our son, who couldn’t sleep through the night, started resting peacefully. We had no idea how deeply our environment was impacting our kids until we saw the difference with our own eyes. We made a heart-wrenching decision: we tore our home down. And that was just the beginning. Insurance refused to cover our loss- mold isn’t included in most policies.
We had to throw away more than 90% of our belongings because they couldn’t be cleaned. Family heirlooms, cherished toys, furniture… it was all contaminated. Watching our children’s stuffed animals go into the trash was like experiencing a slow-motion house fire- except insurance turned their backs on us. But through all of this heartbreak, a new mission was born. I knew there had to be a better way to build. I began studying building biology, indoor air quality, and healthy home principles.
I dove deep into the science of environmental toxins, water damage, mycotoxins, and how construction practices can either support or sabotage your health. We’re not just building homes anymore. We’re building sanctuaries. Today, Lenard Crafted Homes specializes in High Performance Healthy Homes in the Texas Hill Country — homes intentionally designed to support wellness, prevent mold growth, and offer long-term protection for the people inside. Every design decision is filtered through a simple but powerful question: “Will this be safe for the families living here?” Our faith has guided this journey from the beginning.
We believe God allowed this experience to refine our purpose and prepare us to serve others in a profound way. The Bible even speaks about mold in the home- how to treat it, how seriously it should be taken. We believe that caring for people through the homes we build is a sacred calling. This story isn’t just about what happened to us- it’s about the future we’re creating for others.
We want no family to go through what we did. We want children to thrive in environments that support their development. We want parents to rest easy knowing their home isn’t quietly making them sick. We lost everything. But what we gained was a vision — and a deep responsibility — to build healthier homes in Kerrville, TX and across the Texas Hill Country. For health. For legacy. For generations to come.
What is a Healthy, High Performance Home?
Headaches. Joint pain. Brain fog. Dry eyes. Skin irritation. Constant fatigue. Or maybe you just feel like you’re “getting old” faster than you should. These could be signs your body is reacting to something in your home- like toxic chemicals in building materials, excess moisture, or poor air quality. Most people spend 90% of their time indoors, yet indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air.
At Lenard Crafted Homes, we design healthy, high performance custom homes in the Texas Hill Country that protect your health by improving the air you breathe every day. We take a full-system approach to air quality- because comfort and wellness go far beyond just temperature. Our homes are designed to give you clean, balanced, and healthy air in every room. That’s why we focus on the key factors that directly affect air quality and your health-starting with moisture control.
Moisture Control:
Everyday life adds a surprising amount of moisture to the air. A single person can add over a pint of moisture per day just by breathing and moving around. One shower adds more than five pints, and cooking can contribute over ten pints. Too much indoor humidity can lead to mold, mildew, and even breathing issues. That’s why we use whole-home dehumidifiers- to keep humidity at ideal levels, no matter what’s happening outside.
Cleaner Air, Fewer Symptoms:
Common air pollutants like pollen, pet dander, mold, viruses, dust, and bacteria can trigger allergies, asthma, fatigue, and brain fog. We install advanced air filtration that removes up to 4x more particles than standard systems. We also interview every client about their health needs to customize air solutions that truly support your well-being.
Comfortable, Even Temperatures:
With healthy air and balanced humidity, your home feels better – and your thermostat doesn’t have to work as hard. We design ventilation systems that deliver consistent temperatures across the whole house – no hot or cold spots, no energy waste.
No-Toxin Materials:
What your home is made of matters. We avoid materials that release harmful VOCs, microplastics, and foams. We also prevent mold and bacteria growth from the ground up by carefully selecting every building component for health and safety.
Sealed & Controlled for Better Air:
We create a tight building envelope that allows us- not the weather or outside air- to control your home’s environment. We test everything- from air leaks to window seals- to ensure the air stays clean and your home performs exactly as designed.
A System That Works Together:
Your home isn’t a collection of parts- it’s a living system. From insulation to filtration, we design every element to work together for better performance, health, and comfort. When you choose Lenard Crafted Homes, you’re choosing a custom home builder in the Texas Hill Country who believes that a home should support your health, not harm it.

Homes Designed to Breathe
Craig returning to the family business
A recent magazine feature shares the story behind Lenard Crafted Homes and their mission to build thoughtfully crafted homes designed for comfort, clean air, and long-term living.
During the recent rains, many of the homes in Saddlewood Estates, especially those built more recently, suffered high water and damages around their property due to runoff not being properly routed around the building site. Our house, however, did not have any of these problems. Our home is built on the side of a hill so we have drainage concerns both above the house and below. However, Art and his crew did a fantastic job of routing the runoff properly with berms, drainage ditches and culverts. This was the first time it was really tested and everything worked exactly as it was designed!
